RAVES: Jakob Dylan

SST Superstore: Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles. Husker Du, Minutemen, Black Flag. They sell all the hits from
the fabulous 1980's–a time when "grunge" was the sound of your car smashing into the one in front of you.

Flowbee Infomercial. Fascinating late-night entertainment. A do-it-yourself haircut kit for those of us who don't qualify for admittance into beauty parlors.

Good Guys. Los Angeles. A 24-hour audio-video store. Where else can you bump into other spaced-out insomniacs looking for speaker wire at 3 a.m.?

The Band: Jericho. Robbie's gone, trading his writing chops for Armani suits, but the sound remains the same.

Raymond Chandler: The Little Sister. L.A. in the ‘40s. The times have changed, but human nature hasn't.

Junior Brown (Warfield Theater, San Francisco) A great guitar player. The only one I've ever seen who can solo while detuning.

Tim Ferguson (The Mint, Los Angeles). The lone country wolf of the Fairfax District. Incredible hair. Unsigned, but not for long.

Red Wing Shoes. America's oldest work-boot company and my personal favorite. They make Doc Martins look like penny loafers.

Street musicians. Every city's got ‘em. I've rarely met one I didn't like. Please give generously.
